What Is a Single-Port Robotic Surgery Course?

A Single-Port robotic surgery course is a platform-specific educational program focused on performing robotic procedures through a single primary access point using a dedicated Single-Port robotic system.

The curriculum can include system orientation, patient and procedure selection, access planning, port placement, instrument deployment, camera positioning, internal triangulation, bedside assistance, troubleshooting, suturing and procedure-specific techniques.

A Platform Transition Course for Multiple Backgrounds

Previous Multiport experience can be helpful but is not necessarily required for introductory courses. Advanced Single-Port courses may require previous robotic console, simulation, dry lab or clinical experience.

Single-Port Is Not Simply Multiport Through Fewer Incisions

The platform changes access planning, camera behavior, triangulation, retraction, bedside assistance and internal working-space strategy.

Know the Platform Before the Procedure

Participants should understand how the Single-Port system differs from the robotic platform used at their own institution.

Not Every Case Is an SP Case

Procedure type, anatomy, body habitus, previous surgery/radiotherapy, tumor characteristics, need for wide retraction, reconstruction requirements, surgeon experience and possible conversion.

Choose the Correct Route

Transperitoneal, extraperitoneal, retroperitoneal, transvesical and other procedure-specific approaches may be compared according to target anatomy and working-space needs.

Master the Platform-Specific Workflow

Port Placement

Incision-site selection, access-device placement, working-space establishment, system alignment, assistant access, external-interference avoidance and extraction planning.

Instrument Deployment

Insertion, internal articulation, deployment sequence, instrument identification, internal collision avoidance, camera position, target distance and instrument exchange.

Internal Triangulation

Establish separation inside the body, coordinate camera and instruments, maintain working angles, avoid crowding and adapt configuration through different procedural stages.

Camera Navigation

Flexible camera articulation, visual orientation, angle selection, obstruction avoidance, working distance, active-tip visibility and reorientation after major camera movement.

Instrument Coordination

Bimanual control, instrument identification, movement in confined spaces, transfer tasks, traction/countertraction, needle transfer, precision cutting and collision avoidance.

Retraction Strategies

Dynamic retraction, robotic instruments, tissue suspension, positioning adjustments, bedside assistance, internal retraction and procedure-specific exposure.

SP Still Requires Strong Bedside Workflow

Assistant access can be more limited than in Multiport surgery and therefore requires deliberate planning.

Single-Port Robotic Suturing

Suturing within a confined single-access workspace is a distinct technical skill and can be a major practical component of the course.

Apply the Platform to Urologic Procedures

SP Prostatectomy

Access, pelvic exposure, bladder neck, posterior dissection, nerve-sparing, apical dissection, posterior reconstruction, anastomosis and lymphadenectomy.

SP Partial Nephrectomy

Transperitoneal/retroperitoneal access, renal exposure, hilar dissection, ultrasound, retraction, tumor excision, collecting-system repair and renorrhaphy.

SP Simple Prostatectomy

Patient selection, transvesical access, adenoma identification, enucleation, hemostasis, bladder-neck reconstruction and confined-space closure.

SP Reconstruction

Pyeloplasty, ureteral reconstruction, reimplantation, anastomosis, bladder reconstruction and advanced intracorporeal suturing.

Simulation, Dry Lab & Tissue-Based Training

Single-Port Simulation

Camera navigation, instrument deployment, internal triangulation, object transfer, bimanual coordination, instrument crossing, needle handling, suturing and confined-space exercises.

Single-Port Dry Lab

Suture pads, synthetic tissue, silicone models, pelvic anastomosis, kidney and tubular reconstruction models for coordination, cutting, suturing and reconstruction.

Tissue-Based Training

Where available: tissue handling, traction, dissection, energy application, suturing, anastomosis and reconstruction. Advanced laboratory formats remain subject to institutional requirements.

Hands-on Single-Port Training

Hands-on participation takes place in a non-clinical environment using approved simulation or laboratory platforms. Participants do not operate on patients.
